Update from Janet Bedingfield

I’d like to focus my update on the basics of Senior Resource Services (SRS) in this issue of Senior Scroll. In particular, I thought it would be worthwhile to talk about our mission and vision statements, since these reflect why SRS exists, and where we want to end up. It’s important for each person involved with SRS to be familiar with both our mission and vision because they represent who we are and why we’re passionate about what we do.

Our Mission: To offer seniors the opportunity to maintain their physical, emotional, and mental health while living independently.

Our Vision: Enable seniors throughout Weld County to live independently.

It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? Of course we all want this for our Weld County seniors, and for ourselves as we age – it’s a no brainer. And yet, think back to the last time you had to live without your vehicle for just one day while it was in the shop, and suddenly it’s not simple at all. Now take your second vehicle, family, and friends off of your list of options for getting where you need to go. Then add a limited income and health issues which impact your mobility and stamina. I’m overwhelmed by the thought, and I live in Greeley where we have a bus and para-transit system as well as cab services to necessary destinations that are relatively near my home.

How will we meet the needs of all seniors in a county covering 4017 square miles, especially with that population growing at an unprecedented rate? We’re already on the right path with many recently implemented changes. Our Board of Directors will reference our mission and vision statements frequently as they work along side staff to create a strategic plan during a half day retreat in September. Not just for where we need to be as an agency in 5, 10, and 20 years, but also the most efficient way to get there, how to recruit and retain the right people to help, and how to fund the journey. We’re blessed to live in Weld County, CO, where people are of the kind and quality to step up and give us the support we need once our plan is in place and we tell them our story. For that I’m truly grateful.
